Taiwanese Semiconductor Companies Seek Partnerships in Singapore

Industry professionals and companies believe Singapore gathers global talent, while Taiwan offers cutting-edge technology, forming a complementary partnership opportunity.

On Tuesday, May 20, Douglas H.T. Hsu, Representative at the Taipei Representative Office in Singapore, stated during the "Taiwan Semiconductor Innovation Product Launch" that the participating companies are Taiwan’s most innovative leaders, long-time suppliers to TSMC, UMC, ASE, and MediaTek.

He described these firms as "hidden champions," supporting Taiwan’s semiconductor growth with critical equipment, precision instruments, and essential components.

This launch was a sideline event of SEMICON Southeast Asia 2025, attracting over 50 Taiwanese semiconductor companies.

Taiwan holds a key position in the global semiconductor industry, and last year, Singapore became Taiwan’s second-largest export market for semiconductor equipment, with exports reaching USD 830 million (approx. SGD 1.08 billion). Taiwan's investment in Singapore also hit a record high.

Lin Shih-Ching, Chairman of Taiwan Association of Machinery Industry, told Lianhe Zaobao that Taiwan leads in semiconductor technology while Singapore attracts global talent, making it an economic hub for Southeast Asia and Asia as a whole. Collaborating with Taiwan’s top-tier semiconductor companies will be a valuable experience.

Chen Tsan-Jen, General Manager of Taiwanese semiconductor company Tung Ji, emphasized Singapore's ability to attract foreign talent, while Taiwan struggles with talent shortages due to declining birth rates.

Overseas Expansion Becomes an Inevitable Trend

Chen Cheng-Yen, General Manager of Jumbo Laser, attending his first exhibition in Singapore, remarked that from the US-China trade war 1.0 to COVID-19 and now "Trump 2.0," the importance of short-chain supply has become evident. Overseas expansion is a must for the future.

He believes Singapore and Malaysia could become future semiconductor powerhouses in Southeast Asia, making them the top choices for investment and plant establishment.

In 2022, UMC invested USD 5 billion to set up a wafer fab in Singapore, while GlobalFoundries, the world's third-largest foundry, invested USD 4 billion in 2021 to expand its Singapore plant.

Huang Chi-Shan, GM of Sytron Technology, noted that Singapore’s central location in Southeast Asia, along with its political and economic stability, helps reduce geopolitical risks.

Hung Yang-Hao, Special Assistant at Chunghao Precision, which supplies major Taiwanese wafer fabs, acknowledged that due to geopolitical pressures, key customers are shifting overseas. “This is an irreversible trend,” he said, and suppliers will follow them to deepen their overseas presence.
